The Catholic Institute was built during the late 1950s and opened in the early 1960s. It was originally used as a both a cinema and a theatre, and has for generations welcomed audiences within its doors. Across performance spaces and several rooms of different sizes, the building has served important purposes for individuals and organisations across our community. It is immortalised within the memory of many as it has become instrumental for the implementation of large-scale events in Floriana.
We must be bold enough to discover new signs and new symbols, new flesh to embody and communicate the word, and different forms of beauty which are valued in different cultural settings, including those unconventional modes of beauty which may mean little to the evangelizers, yet prove particularly attractive for others.
— Evangelii Gaudium, 167

Since 2023, a new vision and strategy for the site is being developed for it to become a new cultural hub. The office of the Archbishop’s Delegate for Culture will, alongside strategic partners, have this new chapter in the building’s glorious history, as its main mission.
